Communications is Everywhere

By now it’s probably obvious that most of my interests and activities lie in fields that don’t relate to public relations. Band, robotics – really nothing that involves verbal communication with anyone. But what I’ve come to learn this year is that that is not entirely true. The truth is, communications is everywhere. It’s involved in everything we do and experience, even something as unique as marching band. The concept of communication spans past a one-on-one conversation, or presentation, or mass-email. Communication can take many forms. Part of my major is learning all the different ways to communicate. Tactical social media posts, strong presentation skills or the importance of pushing key words in media. Communication tactics can be applied to every aspect of life, no matter how subtle.

I wrote a paper recently analyzing how communications is involved in any small aspect of life, such as a typical college football game. Sure, the marching band plays music, but what does it communicate with its songs? The band director doesn’t just blindly pick what tune we play. How does our performance make the audience feel, and how do we connect with them outside of the game? I discuss these topics and more about how communications is not just left in the public relations field. If you’re interested in this topic, I have left a link below to the page that the article is posted on.
